I often like to stay up late, after my family is asleep. I like the quiet stillness of midnight and beyond. Having a few hours of peace at the end of the day gives me a chance to hear my own thoughts again. If you're up late too, you can usually find me reading a book on the living room sofa or sitting at my computer waiting for inspiration. It's silent now, except for my typing, but most nights I'll have some quiet music on. These days, I particularly like Digitally Imported's Chillout channel for late-night listening.
This picture was taken at about 1:00am, by myself in the mirror of the "powder room" next to my office. I left it reversed because this is how I'm used to seeing myself. It's a half-way decent picture of me this way. If I look at it the other way, the way that everyone sees me, it just looks wrong. So if you wonder what I think I look like (as opposed to what I actually look like), this is it.
I've been working from home alot recently, so my hours are very flexible. I tend to work throughout the day, taking breaks whenever I want to spend time with Helen or the kids, eat a meal, take a nap, work out, or maybe even venture outside. This is about as scruffy as I let myself get these days. I don't think my family cares, and my employer certainly doesn't mind, so it's up to me to decide when it's time to trim the beard. I think the time has come.
